How Stress Effects Your Health
A high stress level, synthetic hormones (birth
control pills, plastics, meats, dairy, environmental), and synthetic
mood stabilizers have thrown our natural regulatory systems way off.
The hypothalamus and the adrenal glands are the body's regulatory
centers for hormonal and chemical balance. Most of us have heard of
serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, cortisol and DHEA. They deal with our
emotional states, metabolism, sexual desire, energy levels, sleep,
immune system function and mental clarity.
a high stress state, our bodies are overusing
our natural supply of neurotransmitters. We are feeling the withdrawal
and supplementing our bodies with caffeine and prescription drugs just
to stay afloat. When we artificially receive these chemicals, our body
is tricked into thinking that we are getting enough and stops producing
the proper amount of neurotransmitters, causing a physiological
addiction. Acupuncture works with these systems, resetting the natural
balance.
When our neurotransmitters are off, so are
our hormones. When estrogen levels drop, as it does pre-menstrual, our
Serotonin levels follow, causing feelings of depression, body pain,
headaches, energy/sleep imbalances, libido and appetite issues. Our
natural hormonal systems do not function properly in the presence of
artificial progestin, low glucose levels, and increased cortisol
levels. The progestin in birth control pills, for PMS suffers, often
cause opposite undesirable effects compared to the natural occurring
progesterone. Low glucose levels will add to bloating, and increased
cortisol from stress, will often lead to weight gain. Thus, by balancing
hormones naturally with Traditional Oriental Medicine, one feels their
whole system balanced without enduring undesirable side effects.
Living in a constant state of stress, our body
goes into the biologic fight or flight state and our blood is diverted
from our digestive and reproductive system to our brain, eyes and
musculoskeletal system. Thus various bodily processes are placed on
hold, suspending cell growth, repair and reproduction. Most of
digestive and gynecological/reproductive imbalances are caused by
decreased blood flow and thus lack of nourishment to function
optimally. If the adrenal stress is constant, the body may forget how to
return to a healthy balance, losing its ability to conjugate hormones
in appropriate amounts, fight pathogens or repair and heal damaged
tissues. Acupuncture will redirect blood flow and harmonize the adrenal
response.
